Starting off the Memorial Day weekend right, Kay and I had some free time this afternoon, so we to the kayaks down to the Pocaty River for a short trip. Which worked out, because we needed to go down to Blackwater and pick up her friend.
There was no room on the North side, so we launched from the South side for the first time, not really a big difference, just in moving the kayak to the water.
I has been a long time since I have been on the Pocaty, I think over a year. Last time I was here the tree was not partially blocking the river. What is a bit more interesting, is the trees that will soon be blocking the river, because if you look up you will see that a tree on the North shore is propping up a tree on the South side, not sure how long that will last, and I am pretty sure that when it comes down it will be a pain to get around...
As we continued down the river, it seems that not much has changed, the trees blocking the river in places have been rearranged, and both sides were pretty much passible with out much effort.
There were a few Egrets, that as usual took flight as we neared. We saw an Osprey, and it was unusually shy, they are normally not bothered by a passing kayak, unless you are near their nest, and then they usually make a ruckus and fly in a circle. This one would leave as wee approached, but after the third encounter with the bird we discovered it was not shy, but not willing to share dinner with us. We could not see what kind of fish it was, but it was a pretty good size.
We saw several turtles sunning, and as usual they would run from the red boat, but Kay in the Blue kayak had no problem getting within a few feet. There was also some Gar activity along the banks and in the shallows.
The wild Iris and Primrose are blooming now, not a large quantity on the Pocaty today, but enough scattered around to make it interesting. I think I may go to Smiths Creek tomorrow, and see how they are doing there.
I have been working with the new camera for a little over a month now, and I think I am starting to get the hang of it. Part of the problem is the auto focus, normally the camera uses 3 frames (default), I set it to the center frame, and that seems to help. I am trying a few other tweaks, and gradually getting there. Thanks for the link Joe, different camera, but the same rules apply.
Oh watch the root on the South side, like a dork I tripped over it landing hard on my knee, with the kayak landing on my knee...
