Dec 30th 2006
Well being the stubborn person that I am, I had to complete this trip, and today was the day. The weather was nice, a light wind and temp was just under 60.
I have been looking at this route for a while now on aerial photos and such, and I was not even sure it could be done. The route was down the North Landing River, up a tributary and down a ditch meeting up with Blackwater Creek. The big question was the ditch, from the pictures I had looked at, it appeared pretty narrow, and possibly a bit shallow. Well it was pretty narrow, but not shallow at all, but the approach from the North was shallow enough that the kayak was rubbing bottom here and there. The gauge at Pungo Ferry Road was reading 8.9 so if you are going to try it I would use that as a reference.
There was not a whole lot of activity above the water, but a lot going on underneath. It seems that just about every turn I took, something under the water stirred.
The majority of the time I spent playing with the new toys, still figuring out the new GPS, I think I got it figured out for the most part. I was also doing some comparison pictures with my camera, and the Binocular camera I got for Christmas. It seems to do a good job, but it has no display so you have to wait to see the results.
